Introduction to the Program

The University of Comenius offers a unique program in English Language and Culture, combined with Bulgarian Language and Culture. This program is designed to prepare students for a career in translation, interpretation, and other fields requiring language competence, intercultural communication, and creative and critical skills.

Program Structure

• The program is a combined study of English and Bulgarian languages and cultures.
• It is a three-year program with a standard duration of study.
• The language of instruction is Slovak, English, and Bulgarian.
• The program is designed to prepare students for a career in translation, interpretation, and other fields.

Admission Requirements

• The admission requirement is a completed secondary education with a maturity exam.
• Applicants must also pass a test of general study prerequisites and a test in English.
• Applicants who have participated in the national round of the English Language and Literature Olympiad and have placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd can be admitted without an entrance exam.

Program Content

• The program includes subjects that provide excellent knowledge of languages and cultures.
• Students will acquire skills in the area of mother tongue and specialized skills related to the translation and interpretation profession.
• The program also includes work with translation software and correct and professional communication in the mediator's role in the communication process.

English Language and Culture

• The program focuses on translation and interpretation.
• Graduates can find employment in various professions requiring language competence, intercultural communication, and creative and critical skills.
• The program prepares students for professions such as translation, interpretation, diplomacy, and education.

Bulgarian Language and Culture

• The program has a character of philological study with a broader Slavic focus.
• Students will acquire a suitable vocabulary and basic knowledge of Bulgarian history, literature, and culture.
• The program includes theoretical and practical subjects, such as translation, simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, and culture of language expression.

Career Opportunities

• Graduates can continue their studies at the master's level.
• They can find employment in diplomacy, European institutions, editing, publishing, media, private sector, and education.
• Graduates can also work as freelance translators or interpreters.

Additional Information

• International students are welcome to apply.
• A knowledge of Slovak at the B2 level (according to CEFR) is required for international students.
• The university offers courses in Slovak language and culture for international students.
