Program Overview
Program Overview
The Medical Neuroscience program is an interdisciplinary theoretical-clinical study program focused on the study of morphological and functional aspects of the nervous system. This program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the nervous system, including its anatomy, histology, physiology, and pathophysiology, as well as its clinical applications in fields such as neurology, psychiatry, and neurosurgery.

Study Program Locations
The study program takes place at the seat of the Medical Faculty of Comenius University in Bratislava, including clinical workplaces that are part of university hospitals providing education for students of the Medical Faculty of Comenius University in Bratislava, with which the faculty has concluded "Contracts for Practical Training" (University Hospital Bratislava, National Institute of Children's Diseases, University Hospital of St. Elizabeth, National Oncology Institute, Institute of Experimental Medicine SAS, etc.).
Awarded Academic Title
The awarded academic title is "doctor" ("philosophiae doctor", abbreviated as "PhD").
Languages of Instruction
The languages in which the study program is conducted are Slovak and English.
Standard Length of Study
The standard length of study is four years (full-time) and five years (part-time).
Graduate Profile and Education Goals
The graduate of the Medical Neuroscience program is capable of independently pursuing study and research in the field of neurosciences and clinical neurosciences, bringing their own solutions to problems in the field. They have complex and specialized skills and are oriented in the latest knowledge based on the current state of knowledge in the fields of neuroanatomy, neurohistology, neurobiology, and neurophysiology, as well as in the fields of neurology, psychiatry, and psychology.
Employability of Graduates
Graduates of the program are in demand in the healthcare sector (psychiatric clinics/child psychiatry clinics, neurology clinics/child neurology clinics, neurosurgery, etc.), as well as in specialized scientific institutions focused on scientific activity in the field of neurosciences. Graduates can also work in the education sector as university teachers or research workers at universities focused on medicine, health sciences, public health, biology, cognitive sciences, biomedicine, bioinformatics, and biomedical engineering.
Quality Assessment of the Study Program by Employers
For the purposes of evaluating the quality of the study program, a questionnaire was sent to selected employers to express their need to maintain the proposed doctoral study program. The submitted letters are available for inspection at the Department of Scientific and Research Activities and Doctoral Studies of the Medical Faculty of Comenius University in Bratislava. Employers who expressed positive opinions on the quality of the study program and support the creation of such a new study program include the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, v.v.i., the Endocrinological Institute in Prague, the Department of Steroids and Proteofactors, the Center for Experimental Medicine SAS, v.v.i., the Neuroimmunological Institute SAS in v.v.i., AXON Neuroscience R&D Services SE, Perbiotics, microbiome solutions, s.r.o., etc.
