Program Overview
Introduction to the Te Ataata Residency Programme
The Te Ataata Residency programme is a joint initiative between AUT and the French Embassy in New Zealand, with the support of Institut Français. This programme aims to develop collaborations and initiatives between the two countries.
About the Programme
The residency is an opportunity for a practice-based French scholar to work alongside their AUT peers on interdisciplinary art-science research, with access to the same facilities, expertise, and materials as staff during their stay. The faculty recognizes that design as a discipline is central to advancing transdisciplinary learning and research.

Residency Details
The resident is housed in a flat on campus in the centre of the city, close to parks and a short walk to the waterfront. Auckland has a reputation for being one of the world's most liveable cities due to its stunning natural environment, high levels of education, and vibrant culture.
Residency Period and Benefits
The residency is a full-time, 8-week programme from 6 July-30 August 2026. The programme includes:
- International return airfare Paris-Auckland
- Visa facilitation
- Stipend: NZ $700 per week
- Accommodation for 6 to 8 weeks
- Full access to facilities, expertise, and materials available to AUT staff
Eligibility Criteria
To apply for the residency, you must be:
- A French citizen or resident, who have been living in France for 5 or more years
- An outstanding scholar in your field, preferably with a recognized artistic practice and proven experience in interdisciplinary work and research-based projects
- Willing to engage in indigenous protocols
- Fluent in English
Application Requirements
In your application, you should demonstrate how a direct collaboration may ensue between your own institution and AUT. We welcome applications that involve two artists/researchers. However, this residency is to fund one resident at AUT in NZ. If you require one additional person to support the research project, then this will be at your expense.
Participation in Activities
We invite you to take part in a range of activities, including:
- Delivering a research outcome, such as a journal publication, an artefact, or an event
- Working on your research alongside AUT staff
- Delivering seminars and/or workshops to AUT's students
- Taking part in conferences or public events about your work
- Participating in media interviews if requested
Research Facilities and Support at AUT
The Faculty of Design and Creative Technologies - Te Ara Auaha has several research groups and advanced technology facilities with expert technicians, to support research, development, and collaboration during the residency. You may also be able to negotiate access to AUT's research institutes and centres.
Previous Artists in Residence
Previous recipients of the Te Ataata residency have worked on a range of projects, including:
- E-textiles and sound design
- Art-science projects addressing issues of kauri dieback
- Interactive artworks using voice as a paintbrush
- Building objects that are simultaneously in two worlds, tangible and virtual
