Bachelor of Business Work Integrated Learning
The Bachelor of Business at AUT includes a work integrated learning component, which provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable workplace experience before graduating. This component is completed in the final semester of the degree.
Work Integrated Learning Options
There are five options for work integrated learning in the Bachelor of Business:
- Co-operative Education (Capstone Experience): a one-semester, 60-point course completed as a 9-week full-time placement in an organization related to the student's studies.
- Capstone Project: an alternative option to Co-operative Education for students who want to pursue postgraduate study. This pathway is also worth 60 points and takes place over 9 weeks.
- Gig option: allows for placements in two organizations for 15 to 20 hours each during the 9 weeks of the placement period.
- Family/own business option: enables students to complete their placement in their own business or in a business owned by their family.
- Virtual internship: provides the opportunity to work for a company overseas, completing specific tasks or projects remotely.

Eligibility and Application Process
To be eligible for work integrated learning, students must have completed their level 5 core courses and at least two level 7 courses in their business major. The application process involves:
- Enrolling in the course BUSS701 Co-operative Education - Capstone Experience
- Attending information sessions and drop-in sessions
- Building a CV and cover letter
- Finding a placement opportunity
- Completing an application form
- Submitting the application for review and approval
Preparatory Workshops and Placement
Once the application is approved, students attend preparatory workshops to prepare for their placement. The placement itself is a 9-week full-time commitment, during which students work on real-life projects and apply the skills and knowledge gained throughout their degree.
