Program Overview


Extended Care Paramedic Refresher Short Course

The Extended Care Paramedic refresher short course is designed to refresh knowledge and practice in the primary health care environment. It is run by the Paramedicine team in conjunction with the industry.


Who Can Do This Course

This short course is primarily aimed at prehospital emergency services, including intensive care paramedics, paramedics, and EMTs who have completed the postgraduate course PARA808 Community and Remote Paramedicine, or those who have an ECP Authority to Practice and want to remain current with their clinical practice.


Why This Course is Recommended

The course has been designed with working health professionals in mind. The pre-learning through the online platform is designed to be a self-paced program that can be progressed through at the student's own speed, place, and time. There is only a one-day, clinically based in-class component.


Course Length

The course should take approximately 8 hours of online learning, plus an 8-hour classroom session. However, students will have 2 months to complete the online learning before attending the class.


Course Overview

Online Component

There are four online modules in the form of multi-media presentations covering:


  • Pharmacology
  • ECP procedures
  • Community pathways
  • Review of bPAC The online modules culminate in a compulsory formative MCQ assessment.

Classroom Component

The classroom-based session includes:


  • Skill stations
    • IDC and NG insertion
    • Wound care and closures (including suturing)
    • ENT and eye assessment and review
    • Reasoning and rationale for antibiotic use
    • Fracture management review
  • Case study discussions
  • Simulated patient encounters
