Introduction to the Drug Assisted Airway Management (DAAM) Refresher Short Course
The Drug Assisted Airway Management (DAAM) refresher short course is designed to refresh knowledge and practice in drug-assisted airway management. It is run by the AUT paramedicine team in conjunction with industry.
Course Overview
The course covers various modules, including pharmacology, DAAM procedures, difficult airways, and mechanical ventilation. Participants will also engage in skill stations, clinical simulations, and case study discussions.
What You'll Study in the DAAM Course
The course consists of four online modules in the form of multimedia presentations, covering:
- Pharmacology
- DAAM procedures
- Recognition and troubleshooting the difficult airway
- Review of mechanical ventilation This culminates in a compulsory formative MCQ assessment.
The Classroom-Based Session Includes:
- Skill stations, including:
- Ventilator troubleshooting
- Airway assessment
- Reasoning and rationale for RSI/DSI/truncated intubation
- Cricothyroidotomy
- Inotropic support
- Clinical simulations
- Case study discussions
Course Duration and Structure
The course should take approximately 32 hours of online learning and an 8-hour classroom session. Participants will have 2 months to complete the online learning prior to attending the class.
Who This Course is Suitable For
This short course is primarily aimed at prehospital emergency services, intensive care paramedics with rapid sequence intubation endorsement, and those wishing to challenge for this endorsement. It is designed with working health professionals in mind, offering a self-paced program through the AUT online Canvas platform.
