Program Overview
Prehospital Cardiology Online Short Course
The prehospital cardiology short course is 100% online and run by a team of approved and accredited health professionals from AUT's paramedicine department.
Course Overview
This course includes over 20 engaging multimedia presentations, each lasting up to 40 minutes. After each module, students will complete a multiple-choice quiz to solidify their understanding and reinforce their learning.
What You'll Study
Topics covered include:
- Cardiovascular anatomy and physiology: A three-part revision of anatomy and physiology, cardiac muscle, and cardiac haemodynamics.
- 3 Lead ECG Interpretation module: An 8-part module covering wave formation, rhythm recognition, and the 5-step method of 3 lead ECG interpretation.
- 12 lead ECG Interpretation module: An 8-part module covering the history, layout, and advantages of the 12 lead ECG and a 6-step method of interpretation that includes recognition of bundle branch blocks, hypertrophy, cardiac axis, and ischaemia, injury, and infarct.
- Acute Coronary Syndrome, STEMIs, and STEMI mimics: A 3-part, in-depth covering of these topics to increase 12 lead ECG interpretation skills.
- Dysrhythmias: This module looks at the pathology, consequences, and long and short-term management of common brady and tachy dysrhythmias.
- Cardiac conditions: An introduction to congenital abnormalities, heart failure, electrolyte imbalances, and digoxin toxicity are included in this module. We also include a comprehensive course to help you learn heart sounds and recognise murmurs.
Course Duration
The course should take approximately 16 weeks to complete, but we offer the flexibility to take up to 6 months.
