Program Overview
Introduction to the DIU Mťdecine de la Personne ¬gťe Program
The DIU Mťdecine de la Personne ¬gťe (MPA) is a university program designed for non-specialist physicians who care for elderly patients and wish to improve their practice. This program is part of a new two-year curriculum that replaces the national capacity for geriatric medicine.
Program Objectives
The objectives of the DIU MPA program are to enable physicians to:
- Evaluate the physical, psychological, social, and environmental situation of an elderly person and assess the risk of dependence (fragility, geriatric syndromes).
- Establish a precise diagnosis of common pathologies and their interactions (polypathologies).
- Choose a therapeutic approach, either medicinal or non-medicinal, adapted to elderly patients, considering preventive, curative, rehabilitative, or palliative care, including emergency situations, using professional good practice recommendations from the Haute Autoritť de Santť (HAS) and the Agence Nationale d'Evaluation Sociale et Mťdicosociale (ANESM).
- Prescribe care or refer patients for care, taking into account the social and managerial contexts of the structures and professionals involved.
Program Organization
The program consists of 128 hours of teaching over one academic year, divided into:
- 70 hours of distance learning.
- 56 hours of face-to-face instruction (8 days of 7 hours each).
- 2 hours for the final exam.
Program Content
The program includes:
- Distance Learning Modules: 70 hours of theoretical teaching and 130 hours of personal work, utilizing national e-learning modules managed by the CollŤge National des Enseignants de Gťriatrie and available on the SIDES-NG platform, as well as interregional gerontology courses on the Plubel platform.
- Face-to-Face Modules: Cognitive teachings, including question-and-answer forums and feedback on e-learning, and clinical case studies (practice exchanges) focusing on competency-based learning and thematic seminars.
- Practical Stages: 5 days of practical training in different components of a labeled geriatric care pathway, including at least one day in the geriatric care pathway of the affiliated University Hospital.
Target Audience
The program is designed for:
- Physicians with a thesis, having a professional project in gerontology or caring for elderly patients, preferably in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comtť region.
Validation of the Program
Validation is based on:
- Evaluative quizzes of the teachings.
- A dissertation.
- An oral defense before a jury. Participation in all teachings is mandatory.

The program is led by:
- Pr Pierre JOUANNY, Professor of Universities - Hospital Practitioner, UFR des Sciences de Santť, PŰle Personnes ¬gťes Service de Gťriatrie Ambulatoire, CHU de Dijon. Other instructors include geriatricians, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, healthcare professionals from the sanitary and medico-social sectors, and professionals from the medico-social sector.
