Program Overview

Introduction to the DIU Le Sommeil et sa Pathologie (LSP) Program

The DIU Le Sommeil et sa Pathologie (LSP) program is a comprehensive educational initiative focused on sleep and its pathology. This program is designed to address the limited coverage of sleep medicine in traditional medical education, recognizing the significant impact of sleep disorders on public health.

Program Responsibles

The program is led by:

  • Pr Marjolaine GEORGES, Professor of Universities - Practitioner Hospital, UFR des Sciences de Santé, service de Pneumologie Soins Intensifs CHU Dijon
  • Dr Claudio RABEC, Practitioner Hospital, service de Pneumologie CHU Dijon

Presentation

The teaching on sleep and its pathology is currently limited to a few hours in the second cycle of medical studies, which does not allow for effective medical and economic management. Given the high frequency of sleep pathologies, affecting more than 20% of the population, and involving specialists from several disciplines (neurologists, psychiatrists, pneumologists, ENT specialists, internists, etc.), there is a significant demand for specialized training. Since 2002, national teaching on sleep and its pathology has been provided after an agreement between the French Society for Sleep Research and Medicine (SFRMS) and the French Language Pneumology Society (SPLF), targeting a large number of students with a focus on clinical practice and future work in sleep centers.

Objectives of the Formation

The pedagogical objectives of the DIU "Le Sommeil et sa Pathologie" are:

  1. To acquire theoretical knowledge concerning normal sleep and biological rhythms, their evolution throughout life, neurobiological substrates, pathologies, physiopathologies, treatments, and management.
  2. To acquire clinical practice through mandatory internships in approved sleep centers to manage sleep pathologies and explore normal and pathological sleep and rhythms.

Organization Pédagogique

The program spans 2 academic years, totaling 239 hours of teaching:

  • 1st Year (89 hours): Theoretical teaching through 5 seminars.
  • 2nd Year (150 hours): Practical teaching, with mandatory internships in the Sleep Unit of the university of registration. Pedagogical tools used include visioconferences and e-learning platforms.

Public

The target audience includes:

  • Doctors
  • Pharmacists Prerequisites for enrollment include being a Doctor of Medicine, Dental Surgery, or Pharmacy, or having validated the 2nd cycle of medical studies, or holding a Master's degree in biomedical research, or foreigners with equivalent titles. Validation of the Formation

Validation criteria include:

  • 1st Year: Attendance and a written exam at the end of the academic year. Only students who pass the written exam can enroll in the 2nd year.
  • 2nd Year: A 4-week clinical internship (which can be divided) and an oral exam at the end of the year. To be declared admitted to the diploma, the candidate must satisfy attendance conditions, validate their internship, and obtain a final note of at least 10/20 without compensation.
