Programme in Using DHIS2 for Health Management

Purpose

This course advances knowledge and practical skills on the use of routine health data and information for decision-making and will strengthen the manager's ability to manage, monitor and report on public health interventions and results at facility, district, provincial and national levels. These competencies will enable the qualifying student to use quality routine health data and information for evidence-based health results management and monitoring approaches to optimize health programs and health care system performance.

Target

The course targets, but is not limited to, managers working in public healthcare settings that provide and/or manage comprehensive community, Primary Health Care and hospital services, such as:

• Health Care Professionals responsible for clinical data collection, processing and use of information for patient management
• National, Provincial and District Health Program Managers
• National, Provincial, District and Health Facility Managers

Admission Requirements

• Any HEQF Level 6 qualification or equivalent in health-related disciplines, for example: Diploma or degree in Nursing and any health-related discipline
• Basic Computer literacy

• Surveillance approaches
• The use of Routine Health Information for EBHRM
• Legal, ethical and security aspects of Health Information and the use thereof
• Importance and monitoring of data validation and quality data - for evidence-based health decisions data from patient to national levels
• District health Information system (DHIS) and DHIS2 / webDHIS
  • Introduction to DHIS2 data management, validation and responsibilities from facility to national levels
  • DHIS2 feedback procedures and protocols to meet South African Health Care System and MER requirements
• RIPDA (Rapid Internal Performance Data Quality Audits) for preparing health facilities to meet the Auditor General of South Africa (AGSA) data quality audit requirements

Evidence Based Health Results Management (DHIS22B)

Content

• Key performance information concepts in the Presidency and National Treasury's results-based pyramid
• Statistics South Africa data quality requirements
• South African National Indicator Set (NIDS) data matrix
• EBHRM and MER models and chain
• Evidence Based Health Results Management, (EBHRM), Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting (MER)
• Use of DHIS2 dashboards, pivot tables and maps for EBHRM and MER from facility to national level
• DHIS2 as management decision making tool
• Use of health facility data in DHIS2 for evidence-based decisions (aimed at meeting health goals to reduce mortality and morbidity) at the following levels:
  • Health facility
  • Health district sub-district
  • Provincial and
  • National levels
• South African National Indicator Set (NIDS) data matrix
• Patient Experience of Care (PEC)
• Surveillance data

Programme Administrator

The programme administrator is responsible for the overall administration of the programme.

The course leader is Dr. MM Ramukumba, with expertise in community nursing, epidemiology, health information management, sociology, and curriculum studies.
