Master's & Doctoral Degrees

The Master's and Doctoral degrees offered by the university provide advanced knowledge and research skills in various fields. These degrees are designed to equip students with the capacity to undertake independent inquiry and provide them with advanced professional and academic knowledge.


Admission Requirements

To be admitted to a Master's or Doctoral degree, students must meet the following requirements:


  • An appropriate Bachelor's or Honours degree with a minimum number of credits at the required NQF level and an average of at least 60%.
  • For students with foreign qualifications, including those from African countries, their qualifications must be evaluated by SAQA.
  • Students must submit a transcript or academic record, as well as a document describing their intended research.
  • Applicants must meet the suitability and viability criteria for their intended research, including adequate supervisory capacity and research expertise in the discipline or department.

Student Fees and Funding

The application fee for Master's and Doctoral degrees is R150.00, which is non-refundable. Student fees for the 2025 academic year are available, and students can also explore funding and bursary opportunities.


Application for Admission

Applications for Master's and Doctoral degrees are open, and students can apply online. They must upload all supporting documents within 10 working days of applying. The application will be declined if the documents are not uploaded on time.


Registration

Only students whose application for admission was approved and re-registering students who made sufficient progress during the current academic year can register online. Coursework Master's degree students must await the official approval of their research proposal module before re-registering.


Curriculum

The curriculum for Master's and Doctoral degrees includes coursework, research proposals, and dissertations. Students must complete their studies within the specified time frame, which is typically three years for a Master's degree.

The Master of Education in Educational Management is a post-graduate qualification that provides advanced knowledge in educational management. The purpose of this degree is to:


  • Provide qualifiers with advanced knowledge in some aspect or sub-field of education.
  • Accredit candidates who demonstrate the capacity to undertake well-founded and independent inquiry in a field of education, training, and development.

Admission Requirements

To be admitted to the Master of Education in Educational Management, students must have:


  • An appropriate Bachelor of Education Honours Degree with a minimum of 96 credits at NQF level 8 and an average of 60%.
  • Or an appropriate Postgraduate Diploma with a minimum of 96 credits at NQF level 8 and an average of 60%.
  • Students must submit proof of employment on a management level or have at least six years of teaching experience.

Curriculum

The curriculum for the Master of Education in Educational Management includes coursework, research proposals, and a mini-dissertation. Students must complete their studies within three years.


Research Outline

Students must submit a detailed research outline for their intended research, which must align with one of the departmental research focus areas. The research outline should include:


  • Title
  • Summary of topic
  • Short literature review
  • Expected contribution of the study
  • Methodology to be followed
  • Availability of the data
  • List of references
  • Reasons why the student is interested in the topic
