Bachelor of Consumer Science

Purpose Statement

The Bachelor of Consumer Science is designed to equip students with knowledge, understanding, and competencies in the areas of food, clothing and textiles, hospitality services, or nutrition, complemented by business management skills. Graduates will have the capability to establish their own businesses, operate within the retail sector, or serve as advisors or facilitators. This program allows students to manage and work in diverse contexts relating to fashion, food, hospitality, or nutrition, depending on the chosen specialization.

Admission Requirements

Your admission to Unisa is contingent upon meeting the specific qualifications for your desired program. The following criteria are applicable for this qualification:


  • A National Senior Certificate (NSC) with degree endorsement or equivalent with at least:
    • 50% in the language of teaching and learning
    • 40% in Mathematics or Technical Mathematics, or
    • 60% in Mathematical Literacy
  • Alternatively, a Senior Certificate (SC) with matriculation exemption with at least:
    • D symbol on Higher Grade (HG) or a C symbol on Standard Grade (SG) in the language of teaching and learning
    • E symbol on HG or D symbol on SG in Mathematics
  • An appropriate Higher Certificate fulfilling the Language and Mathematics requirements.
  • For applicants applying through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL):
    • Must be at least 27 years old,
    • Have completed at least Grade 10,
    • Possess a minimum of five years' relevant work experience in the field of study.

Prospective students who do not meet these requirements should consider applying for a lower-level qualification.

  • Payment should include the 8-digit student number from Unisa and the application fee reference number.
  • Note that the application fee is non-refundable even if the applicant decides not to continue with their studies.
