In-Service (WIL) Training

The Department provides training aimed at integrating academic learning with practical application in the workplace for students who have completed the theoretical subjects for their Diploma in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. This training is known as Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) and is compulsory for engineering technicians after completing their theoretical coursework.

• Program Structure
  • Full-time training is conducted at the Mechanical and Industrial Engineering laboratories at the University of South Africa (Unisa).
  • The training primarily involves workshop activities and project-based design.
  • The focus of the projects is to offer practical training and to expose students to an industrial-scale setup.
• Facilities and Equipment
  • The laboratories are equipped with all necessary tools and equipment to facilitate the activities outlined in the WIL program.
• Compliance and Safety
  • Training activities are designed to meet the requirements of the work-integrated programme as specified by the Engineering Council of South Africa (ECSA).
  • Personal protective equipment (PPE) is provided by the Department and includes:
    • Dust mask
    • Work suit
    • Safety glasses
    • Gloves
    • Safety boots
  • Students are assigned a toolbox and are provided access to lockers for personal item storage.

Activities and Projects

Students engaged in the In-Service (Merseta) training participate in various hands-on activities and projects, including:

• Mini Baja Car
• Solar Powered Wheelchair

This diverse range of projects is designed not only to enhance technical skills but also to prepare students for real-world engineering challenges through practical experience.
