Purpose Statement

The primary purpose of this qualification is to equip learners with foundational knowledge, cognitive skills, and practical techniques crucial for higher education studies in life, environmental, and related fields. The program emphasizes general scientific principles, concepts, and theories that enhance students' comprehension of scientific ideas at advanced levels. Learners are introduced to methodologies suitable for higher education studies in life and environmental sciences. Upon completion, graduates will possess essential knowledge and competence that can be applied in the workplace. This qualification serves as a pathway for those lacking the necessary requirements for entry into Diploma programs, allowing them to gain sufficient competency to qualify for such admissions. Learners completing this qualification can articulate into the Diploma, Bachelor of Consumer Sciences, and Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Environmental Management qualifications. The program is delivered through both online and distance learning modes.

Who Can Register?

• Applicants: New applicants and Unisa students who have applied for admission to a new qualification may register only upon receiving an offer of placement from Unisa and accepting the offer online.
• Re-registering Students: Students wishing to register for the 2026 academic year can do so once the registration period opens. Those intending to start a new qualification must apply online for the alternative qualification during the designated application period.

Module Selection Guidance

Each Unisa qualification requires students to pass a specific number of NQF level credits within a prescribed timeframe to graduate.

• Co-requisite: If Module A is a co-requisite for Module B, both must be registered for simultaneously.
• Pre-requisite: Module A must be passed before registration for Module B can proceed.

Students are limited to a maximum of 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year, excluding supplementary and aegrotat examinations from prior semesters. Modules taken for non-degree or non-diploma purposes will also count towards this credit limit.

Study Time Estimation

• For semester modules: Approximately 6 to 8 hours per week.
• For year modules: Approximately 4 to 6 hours per week.
