Rules

• Teachers who are already professionally qualified may not offer this qualification.
• It is the student's responsibility to consult with the relevant Education Department districts or Provincial Education Departments on upgrading to additional REQV levels.
• Outstanding admission requirements may not be offered for non-degree purposes (NDP).
• Students who do not meet all the admission requirements should consider applying for a BEd degree if not already professionally qualified.
• UNISA reserves the right to cancel PGCE modules registered in excess of the specified number.
• Students completing the PGCE over more than one year must register for the Teaching Methodology in the same year as the Teaching Practice.
• The maximum duration for completion of this qualification is three years.
• Some pre-requisites and/or co-requisites may not apply as they do not form part of the curriculum.
• This qualification consists of 11 modules and 132 credits.

Purpose Statement

This qualification is a professional 'capping' qualification for educators in schools. It aims to:

• Develop and consolidate appropriate disciplinary, pedagogical, practical, and situational knowledge.
• Cultivate practical understanding of teaching and learning in diverse South African schools, focusing on educational theory, phase and subject specialisation, practice, and policy.
• Foster self-reflexivity and self-understanding among prospective teachers.
• Nurture a commitment to the ideals of the teaching profession and an understanding of its complexities.
• Develop the professional dispositions and self-identity of learners as teachers.
• Encourage learners to become active citizens and to instill the dispositions of citizenship in their students.
• Enhance competencies to organise learning among a diverse range of learners in various contexts.

This qualification will be presented using both online and distance learning modes.

Who Can Register?

• Applicants (new applicants & Unisa students applying for a new qualification) may only register if they have received and accepted an offer of placement from Unisa.
• Re-registering students may register for the 2026 academic year after the registration period opens. To start a new qualification, applications must be completed online during the prescribed period.

Module Structure

Registration requires careful consideration of modules for successful completion and graduation:

• Co-requisites: A module required to be taken with another.
• Pre-requisites: A module that must be passed before registering for another.

The maximum allowable credits/modules per academic year or semester are:

• 60 credits per semester
• 120 credits per academic year
