Admission Requirements

  • It is important to note that teachers who are already professionally qualified to teach may not enroll in this qualification.
  • Students are advised to consult with the relevant Education Department districts or Provincial Education Departments regarding the process for upgrading to additional REQV levels.
  • Outstanding admission requirements may not be offered for non-degree purposes (NDP).
  • Those who do not meet all the admission requirements should consider applying for a Bachelor of Education (BEd) degree if they are not already professionally qualified.

Rules and Regulations

  • Maximum Duration: The maximum time allowed to complete the PGCE qualification is three years.
  • Students who wish to complete this qualification over more than one year must register for the Teaching Methodology in the same year as the Teaching Practice.
  • UNISA reserves the right to cancel PGCE modules registered beyond the prescribed limits.

Purpose Statement

This qualification serves as a professional 'capping' qualification for educators in schools. It aims to:


  • Develop an integrated understanding of appropriate disciplinary, pedagogical, practical, and situational knowledge.
  • Cultivate practical teaching and learning techniques applicable in a diverse range of South African schools, alongside theoretical understandings of educational practices and policies.
  • Encourage self-reflexivity and personal growth among prospective teachers.
  • Foster commitment to the ideals of the teaching profession and an understanding of teaching as a vocation.
  • Promote the qualities and competencies necessary for organizing learning in diverse educational contexts.

Mode of Presentation

This qualification will utilize both online and distance learning methodologies.


Module Selection Guidelines

  • Applicants may only register if they have received a placement offer from UNISA and have accepted it online.
  • The following details outline the framework for module registration:
    • Co-requisites: If a module is a co-requisite for another, both must be registered simultaneously.
    • Pre-requisites: If a module is a pre-requisite for another, the former must be completed prior to registering for the latter.
  • Students may not exceed the maximum allowed credits/modules per academic year or semester, with a maximum of:
    • 60 credits per semester
    • 120 credits per academic year
