Rules and Regulations
- Teachers who are already professionally qualified to teach may not offer this qualification.
- It is the student's responsibility to consult with the relevant Education Department districts or Provincial Education Departments regarding upgrading to additional REQV levels.
- Outstanding admission requirements may not be offered for non-degree purposes (NDP).
- Students who do not meet all admission requirements should consider applying for a BEd degree if not already professionally qualified.
- Unisa reserves the right to cancel PGCE modules registered in excess of this number.
- Students completing the PGCE over more than one year must register for the Teaching Methodology in the same year as the Teaching Practice.
- The maximum time allowed to complete the PGCE qualification is three years.
- Some pre-requisites and/or co-requisites outlined in this qualification may not apply, as they do not form part of the curriculum.
- This qualification consists of 11 modules and 132 credits.
Purpose Statement
The Postgraduate Certificate in Education serves as a professional 'capping' qualification for educators in schools, with the following aims:
- Develop and integrate appropriate disciplinary, pedagogical, practical, and situational knowledge.
- Cultivate a practical understanding of teaching and learning in diverse South African schools, considering educational theory, phase and subject specialization, practice, and policy.
- Foster self-reflexivity and self-understanding among prospective teachers.
- Nurture commitment to the ideals of the teaching profession and an understanding of teaching as a profession.
- Shape the professional dispositions and self-identity of learners as teachers.
- Develop learners as active citizens and instill the dispositions of citizenship in their students.
- Promote the competencies needed to organize learning among a diverse range of learners in varied contexts.
Mode of Presentation
This qualification will be delivered through online and distance learning.
Who Can Register
- Applicants (new candidates and Unisa students applying for a new qualification) may register only if they have received and accepted an offer of placement from Unisa.
- Re-registering students may register for the upcoming academic year once the registration period opens. Should they wish to start a new qualification, they are advised to apply online for the alternative qualification during the prescribed application period.
Modular Structure
Students must pass a certain number of credits within a specified timeframe to graduate.
- Co-requisites:
- Module A must be taken if registering for Module B, and both must be registered simultaneously.
- Pre-requisites:
- Module A must be passed before registering for Module B.
Students are not permitted to register for more than 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year, excluding supplementary and/or aegrotat examinations.
