Purpose Statement
The purpose of this qualification is to develop qualified classroom teachers who can demonstrate knowledge and skills in the teaching of a particular specialisation, phase and/or subject(s). The qualification seeks to foster self-reflexivity and self-understanding among prospective teachers, develop the professional disposition and self-identity of students as teachers, and promote and develop the disposition and competences to organise learning among a diverse range of learners in diverse contexts.
Rules
- This BEd degree is offered with different streams/School Subject Combinations.
- Each combination is structured for a specific teaching field and students need to follow one of these.
- Students may only offer one of these combinations, unless the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) approves the offering of a second BEd degree in a different School Subject Combination.
- A student who has successfully completed this qualification will be able to teach from Grades 7 to 12 in the School Subject Combination selected.
- Teaching Practice is a compulsory component in this program and must be taken according to the specific criteria every year.
- Five weeks practical is required every year, and three weeks must be offered consecutively.
- This qualification comprises both semester and year modules.
- Year modules may only be registered during the January registration period of each academic year.
- Students must also register themselves with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) from the first year of BEd registration.
Curriculum
The curriculum for this qualification is structured into four levels, with compulsory and elective modules.
Level 1
- Group A: Compulsory modules include Being a Professional Teacher, Economics IA, Economics IB, Business Management IA, Business Management IB, and Teaching Practice for Senior Phase I.
- Group B: Languages - students choose two modules from the same language.
- Group C: Language of Communicative Competence - students choose one module from a list of options.
Level 2
- Group A: Compulsory modules include Becoming a Teacher, Introductory Financial Accounting, Introduction to Entrepreneurship and Small Business Management, General Management, Introduction to Theory of Literature, Teaching Additional Languages in the Senior Phase, and Teaching Practice for Senior Phase II.
- Group B: Languages - students choose three modules from the same language already completed on the second year.
Level 3
- Group A: Compulsory modules include Computer Integration in the classroom, Curriculum Studies, Inclusive Education, Instructional studies, Psychology of Education, Introduction to Literary Genres, Teaching Business Studies in Further Education and Training, and Teaching Practice for Senior Phase III.
- Group B: Languages - students choose two modules from the same language already completed on the second year.
Level 4
- Group A: Compulsory modules include Assessment in Education, Educational studies, Environmental Education, Philosophy of Education, Physical Education and Sports Coaching, Research and Critical reason, South African Education System, Sociology of Education, and Teaching Practice for Senior Phase IV.
- Group B: Teaching Methodology - students choose one module based on the language selected on the third year level.
Registration
- Applicants may only register if they have received an offer of placement from Unisa and have accepted the offer online.
- Re-registering students may register for the 2026 academic year once the registration period opens.
Module Selection
- Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that students need to pass a certain number of NQF level credits within a certain amount of time in order to graduate.
- Co-requisite: Module A is a co-requisite for Module B. Students must register for both modules simultaneously.
- Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, students must pass Module A before registering for Module B.
- Students may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits/modules per academic year and/or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.
