Rules
- This BEd degree is offered with different streams/School Subject Combinations.
- Each combination is structured for a specific teaching field and students need to follow one of these.
- Students may only offer one of these combinations, unless DHET (Department of Higher Education and Training) approves the offering of a second BEd degree in a different School Subject Combination.
Purpose Statement
The qualification will develop qualified classroom teachers who can demonstrate focused knowledge and skills in the teaching of particular specialisations. The qualification requires a specific depth of, and specialisation in, knowledge together with practical skills and workplace experience to enable successful students to enter the teaching profession and apply their learning as beginner teachers in schools in varying contexts.
Curriculum
The curriculum for this qualification is structured into four levels, each with compulsory and elective modules. The modules are designed to provide students with a comprehensive education that equips them with the required subject content knowledge base, educational theory, and methodology.
Level Combination Rules
- Choose all the modules from Group A.
- Choose two modules from Group B for the first level, three modules for the second level, and one module for the third and fourth levels.
- Choose one module from Group C for each level.
Modules
The modules for each level are as follows:
First Level
- Group A: Compulsory modules include BPT1501, BTE2601, ENG1501, ENG1502, PYC1511, TAM2601, and TPS2601.
- Group B: Choose two language modules from AFK1501, AFK1503, AFL1501, AFL1502, ARB1501, and ICS1501.
- Group C: Choose one language module from AFK1505, NDE1507, NSO1507, SNL1507, SSO1507, SWA1507, TSO1507, TSW1507, VEN1507, XHO1507, and ZUL1507.
Second Level
- Group A: Compulsory modules include ENG2601, ENG2602, ENG2603, PYC1512, PYC2611, and TPS2602.
- Group B: Choose three language modules from AFK2601, AFK2602, AFL2601, AFL2602, AFL2603, ARB2602, ARB2603, and ICS2602.
- Group C: Choose one module from TMS3716 and TMS3720.
Third Level
- Group A: Compulsory modules include CIC2601, CUS3701, ENG3701, ENG3702, INC3701, ISC3701, PED3701, PYC2612, and TPS3703.
- Group B: Choose one elective module from TMS3715 and TMS3719.
Fourth Level
- Group A: Compulsory modules include AED3701, EDS3701, EED2601, PDU3701, PES3701, RCE2601, SAE3701, SAE3701, SDENG3J, SED2601, and TPS3704.
- Group B: Not specified for this level.
Registration
- Applicants may only register if they have received an offer of placement from Unisa and have accepted the offer online.
- Re-registering students may register for the 2026 academic year once the registration period opens.
Choosing Modules
- Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF level credits within a certain amount of time in order to graduate.
- Co-requisite: Module A is a co-requisite for Module B. You want to register for Module B, but have not yet passed Module A. You must then register for both Modules A and B simultaneously.
- Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.
Time Consideration
- You must take your available time into consideration when choosing your modules, as this will impact your academic performance.
- You need approximately 6 to 8 hours per week for semester modules and 4 to 6 hours per week for year modules.
