University Program Information

Bachelor of Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training

This qualification is designed to develop qualified classroom teachers who can demonstrate focused knowledge and skills in the teaching of particular specializations. The program requires a specific depth of knowledge and specialization, together with practical skills and workplace experience, to enable successful students to enter the teaching profession.


Purpose Statement

The purpose of this qualification is to foster self-reflexivity and self-understanding among prospective teachers, develop the professional disposition and self-identity of students as teachers, and promote and develop the disposition and competences to organize learning among a diverse range of learners in diverse contexts.


Curriculum

The curriculum for this qualification includes a range of modules, such as:


  • Being a Professional Teacher
  • Engineering Drawing I
  • Electrical Engineering I
  • Engineering Graphics
  • Engineering Mechanics I
  • Teaching Practice for Senior Phase I

Admission Criteria

Applicants may only register if they have received an offer of placement from the university and have accepted the offer online. Re-registering students may register for the 2026 academic year once the registration period opens.


Registration

Students must register for the relevant teaching methodology in each year of registration with the applicable teaching practice module of the academic level. The university reserves the right to cancel any teaching practice module that is not registered concurrently with the relevant teaching methodology.


Modules

The program consists of several levels, each with its own set of compulsory and elective modules. Students must choose all the modules from Group A and one module from Group B. The modules include:


  • Group A: Compulsory modules, such as Becoming a Teacher, Civil Engineering Drawing II, and Electrical Engineering II
  • Group B: Elective modules, such as Afrikaans for Beginners, Applied African Language Communicative Competence for Second Additional Language, and Basic Sign Language

Pre-requisites and Co-requisites

Some modules have pre-requisites or co-requisites, which must be met before registration. For example, Module A may be a pre-requisite for Module B, or Module A may be a co-requisite for Module B.


Maximum Number of Credits

Students may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits per academic year and/or semester. The maximum number of credits does not include supplementary and/or aegrotat examinations from a previous semester.

Transitional arrangements have been approved by the College of Education for students who have already started the program.
