Rules for the Bachelor of Education Honours

  • The program must be taken over two years.
  • Students register for a specific stream according to their chosen field of study/discipline.
  • The program consists of 5 modules:
    • Group A: Compulsory (all modules must be taken in year 1, except HREDU82)
      • RSE4801
      • HREDU82
      • One module in the chosen field of study and/or discipline
    • Group B: Two modules selected
  • Students register up to four modules in the first year, including RSE4801 and the core module from the stream, as well as at least one module from Group B.
  • A student must pass RSE4801 and the core module according to the stream to be admitted to the fifth module, HREDU82, in the second year.
  • Students register for not more than three modules in the second year, which includes HREDU82.
  • RSE4801 is a prerequisite for HREDU82.

Purpose Statement

The Bachelor of Education Honours will prepare learners for research-based postgraduate study in Education. It serves to consolidate and deepen a learner's expertise in Foundations of Education and the use of these understandings in an integrated way to explore a range of educational issues related to their areas of significant combinations or stream.


Curriculum for the Bachelor of Education Honours

  • The curriculum includes the following modules:
    • Group A: Compulsory
      • HED4806 - International and Comparative Education
      • HREDU82 - Research Project in Education (pre-requisite: RSE4801)
      • RSE4801 - Research in Education (co-requisite: ICH4801 or PSE4801 or CSP4801 or HED4802 or HED4803 or HED4804 or HED4805 or HED4806 or HED4807 or HED4808 or HED4809 or HED4810 or HED4811 or HED4812 or HED4813 or HED4814 or HED4815 or HED4816 or HED48017 or HED4818)
    • Group B: Elective Core Modules (choose any 2)
      • HED4802 - Curriculum Studies
      • HED4804 - Philosophy in Education
      • HED4805 - South African History of Education
      • HED4809 - Sociology of Education
      • HED4814 - Psychology of Education

Registration Information

  • Applicants (new applicants and Unisa students who applied for admission to a new qualification) may only register if they have received an offer of placement from Unisa and have accepted the offer online.
  • Re-registering students may register for the 2026 academic year once the registration period opens.

Choosing Modules

  • Each Unisa qualification is structured in such a way that you need to pass a certain number of NQF level credits within a certain amount of time in order to graduate.
  • Co-requisite: Module A is a co-requisite for Module B. You want to register for Module B, but have not yet passed Module A. You must then register for both Modules A and B simultaneously.
  • Pre-requisite: If Module A is a pre-requisite for Module B, you must pass Module A before you may register for Module B.
  • You may not register for more than the allowed maximum number of credits/modules per academic year and/or semester: 60 credits per semester or 120 credits per academic year.
