Unit Overview

The unit THBS620 - Special Study in Biblical Studies is designed to provide students with the opportunity to extend their studies in biblical literature and develop further knowledge of specialized aspects of the discipline.


Unit Rationale, Description, and Aim

This unit offers the School of Theology the flexibility to respond to emerging needs and provides students with the chance to engage in advanced studies in biblical literature. It enables students to explore specific areas of interest, develop critical thinking and research skills, and apply their knowledge to real-world situations.


Learning Outcomes

Upon completing this unit, students will be able to:


  • Identify key issues, debates, and scholarly opinions in the area of study
  • Analyze and evaluate critically major issues and scholarly arguments in the area
  • Demonstrate appropriate skills in the area of study, including effective communication and application of knowledge to professional and personal faith practice

Unit Content

The unit content will be chosen from a particular area of expertise of the member of staff or visiting lecturer in consultation with the Head of School.


Assessment Strategy and Rationale

A range of assessment options will be used to meet the learning outcomes and develop graduate attributes consistent with University assessment requirements. Assessment tasks may include essays, reports, book reviews, in-class presentations, case studies, and analytic activities.


Overview of Assessments

  • A verbal or written presentation that requires students to analyze and evaluate critically some of the major issues and scholarly arguments in the area of study (50%)
  • An extended written task, such as a research essay, that enables students to demonstrate appropriate skills in the area of study (50%)

Learning and Teaching Strategy and Rationale

This unit involves 150 hours of focused learning, including formally structured learning activities and self-directed reading, research, and preparation of assessment tasks. The teaching and learning strategy is based on constructivist and andragogical principles, emphasizing student-centered learning and relevance to the students' contemporary context.
