Program Overview


Graduate Diploma in Family and Systemic Therapy

The Graduate Diploma in Family and Systemic Therapy is a postgraduate qualification that provides students with advanced knowledge and skills in family and systemic therapy. This course is also an exit qualification from the Master of Family and Systemic Therapy.


Credit Points and Duration

  • The course consists of 80 credit points.
  • The minimum duration of the course is 2 years part-time.

Approved Locations

  • The course is approved to be delivered in Melbourne and other locations by request, including the Williamsroad Family Therapy Centre in Melbourne, Victoria.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, an applicant must:


  1. Hold one of the following qualifications:
    • Bachelor degree in health or a related helping discipline
    • Graduate Certificate in Family and Systemic Therapy
  2. Demonstrate a minimum of 2 years' experience in counselling, therapy, or clinical work with individuals or families.
  3. Successfully complete the interview process associated with the course.

Completion Requirements

To qualify for the degree, a student must complete 80 credit points from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:


  • 60 credit points from Specified Core Units (Part A)
  • 20 credit points from Supervision Units (Part B)

Exit Points

A student who has completed the following requirements from the Schedule of Unit Offerings may exit with the relevant award:


  • Graduate Certificate in Family and Systemic Therapy: 40 credit points from Specified Core Units.

Progression Requirements

Students are required to follow the pattern of unit enrolment set out in the relevant Course Enrolment Guide, unless otherwise approved by the Course Coordinator.

  • FTHY603 Practices and Processes of Family and Systemic Therapy 2 (10 cp)
  • FTHY604 Research Informed Frameworks in Family and Systemic Therapy 1 (10 cp)
  • FTHY605 Research Informed Frameworks in Family and Systemic Therapy 2 (10 cp)

Part B: Supervision Units

Complete exactly 20 credit points from the following:


  • FTHY608 Live Supervision and Reflecting Team Practice 1 (10 cp)
  • FTHY609 Live Supervision and Reflecting Team Practice 2 (10 cp)
