Bachelor of Midwifery (Indigenous Cohort)

Overview

The Bachelor of Midwifery (Indigenous Cohort) is a three-year full-time or equivalent part-time course that requires students to complete 240 credit points. The course is designed for students who identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and aims to provide a comprehensive education in midwifery.

Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission to the course, applicants must:

• Identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
• Have completed the following prerequisites at year 12 level, or equivalent:
  • English (Units 3 & 4, C) in Queensland
  • Assumed knowledge: Nil in New South Wales
• Meet the English Language Proficiency requirements as defined in the Admission to Coursework Programs Policy

Completion Requirements

To qualify for the degree, students must complete 240 credit points from the Schedule of Unit Offerings, consisting of:

• 100 credit points from Midwifery Theory units (Part A)
• 70 credit points from Midwifery Professional Practice units (Part B)
• 50 credit points from Interdisciplinary units (Part C)
• 20 credit points from University Core Curriculum units (Part D)

Course Structure

The course is structured into four parts:

Part A: Midwifery Theory Units

Students must complete exactly 100 credit points from the following units:

• MIDW112 Foundations in Midwifery (10 cp)
• MIDW113 Midwifery Care of the Pregnant Woman (10 cp)
• MIDW215 Perinatal Mental Health (10 cp)
• MIDW216 Midwifery Care of the Birthing Woman (10 cp)
• MIDW217 Midwifery Care of the Woman with Complex Needs (10 cp)
• MIDW246 Midwifery Care of the Postnatal Woman and Family (10 cp)
• MIDW335 Babies Needing Extra Care (10 cp)
• MIDW350 The Profession of Midwifery (10 cp)
• MIDW351 Global Perspectives on Midwifery (10 cp)
• MIDW353 The Inquiring Midwife (10 cp)

Part B: Midwifery Professional Practice Units

Students must complete exactly 70 credit points from the following units:

• MIDW110 Midwifery Professional Practice 1 (10 cp)
• MIDW122 Midwifery Professional Practice 2 (10 cp)
• MIDW213 Midwifery Professional Practice 3 (10 cp)
• MIDW224 Midwifery Professional Practice 4 (10 cp)
• MIDW315 Midwifery Professional Practice 5 (10 cp)
• MIDW326 Midwifery Professional Practice 6 (20 cp)

Part C: Interdisciplinary Units

Students must complete exactly 50 credit points from the following units:

• BIOL121 Human Biological Science 1 (10 cp)
• BIOL122 Human Biological Science 2 (10 cp)
• HLSC120 Indigenous Health and Culture (10 cp)
• HLSC122 Evidence for Practice (10 cp)
• HLSC220 Health Care Ethics (10 cp)

Part D: Core Curriculum Units

Students must complete exactly 20 credit points from the following units:

• UNCC100 Self and Community: Exploring the Anatomy of Modern Society (10 cp)
• PHCC102 Being Human (10 cp)
• PHCC104 Ethics and the Good Life (10 cp)
• UNCC300 Justice and Change in a Global World (10 cp)
• PHCC320 The Just Society (10 cp)

Progression Requirements

Students normally complete a unit or units at an introductory level (100-level) in an approved sequence before undertaking advanced level units (200 or 300-level) in that sequence.

Course Maps

The course maps provide a recommended pattern of unit enrolment for students commencing in Semester 1 (full-time or part-time). Students are advised to follow the course map to ensure they complete the required units in the correct sequence.

Additional Information

Students are required to attend up to two residential learning and teaching periods of 1-2 weeks each in Brisbane each semester. The course is not currently offered at the Blacktown campus.
