Course Overview

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts (Humanities) is a four-year full-time or equivalent part-time course that combines education studies with a humanities major. The course is designed to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to become effective teachers in secondary schools.


Admission Requirements

To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet the following requirements:


  • Completion of year 12 or equivalent with a minimum ATAR requirement
  • Demonstration of suitability for teaching
  • English language proficiency
  • Prerequisites for specific teaching areas (e.g., mathematics, English)

Course Structure

The course consists of 360 credit points, comprising:

    • Understanding Learning and Teaching
    • Educational Thought
    • Understanding Learners and Their Contexts
    • Digital Cultures and Capabilities
    • Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Knowledges, Histories and Cultures
  2. Effective Teaching Units (60 credit points):
    • Becoming a Teacher
    • Curriculum and Pedagogies
    • Engaging Learners and Managing Learning Environments
    • Students with Disability and Inclusive Education
    • Assessment and Data Informed Practice
    • Professional Engagement and Reflection
  3. Secondary Curriculum Studies Units (40 credit points):
    • Curriculum, Pedagogy, and Assessment in specific teaching areas (e.g., mathematics, English, science)
  4. Education Elective Units (20 credit points):
    • Comparative Education: Local and Global Contexts
    • Education Electives (e.g., Supporting Teacher Mental Health, Engaging with Global Communities)
  5. Core Curriculum Units (20 credit points):

  6. Bachelor of Arts Major Units (80 credit points):

Progression Requirements

Students must pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) before attempting the second placement unit. Students are required to follow the pattern of unit enrollment set out in the Course Enrolment Guide.


Exit Points

Students who do not meet the requirements for the Bachelor of Education (Secondary)/Bachelor of Arts (Humanities) may exit with a:


  1. Non-Award Certificate in Educational Studies
  2. Diploma in Educational Studies (Tertiary Preparation)
  3. Non-Award Certificate in Liberal Arts
  4. Diploma in Liberal Arts
  5. Bachelor of Arts
