Paramedicine Theory and Practice: Primary
The Paramedicine Theory and Practice: Primary unit is a 10-credit point course that introduces students to the theory, practice, and people-centered care required of primary care presentations commonly encountered by paramedics.
Unit Rationale, Description, and Aim
The unit aims to introduce students to the theory, practice, and people-centered care required of primary care presentations commonly encountered by paramedics. Students will learn about primary care, continuum of care, interdisciplinary roles and teams, and introduction to technology in healthcare.
Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- Identify the aetiologies, epidemiology, pathophysiology, presentations, clinical assessments, implications, and management principles of injuries and illnesses within a paramedicine clinical decision-making framework.
- Discuss evidence-based practice principles and appropriate healthcare pathways that encompass a biopsychosocial approach to primary care within the scope of paramedicine.
- Integrate appropriate clinical assessments, therapeutic, social, and cognitive skills into a paramedic decision-making framework to assist people affected by illnesses and injuries typical of primary care presentations.
- Reflect upon their application of a paramedic decision-making framework, culturally safe therapeutic skills, and professionalism in the practice environment.
Assessment Strategy and Rationale
To pass this unit, students are required to submit all assessment tasks and gain an aggregate mark of 50% within the written assessment and exam. The assessment tasks include:
