Program Overview
Senior Lawyers Program
The Senior Lawyers Program (SLP) is coordinated by the Center For International Legal Studies (CILS), an Austrian-American association based in Salzburg. The program aims to bring American law professors with at least 20 years of experience to universities in Central and Eastern Europe. These professors teach courses on specific areas of the American legal system to students at the host institution without receiving a honorarium.
Program History
The program was launched in 2005, when Prof. Dennis Campbell, Director of CILS and a professor at Suffolk University Boston, established the SLP European network after receiving direct inquiries from universities interested in participating in the program.
Participation of Debreceni Egyetem
The Faculty of Law at Debreceni Egyetem has been involved in the program from the beginning. The local coordinator is Dr. Fézer Tamás, a university lecturer who represented the Faculty at the program's opening orientation in Salzburg in January 2006. Since 2006, guest lecturers have arrived at the Faculty every semester, teaching elective courses in English to a maximum of 25 students over a period of 2-4 weeks, typically in 6-7 double-hour sessions.
Selection of Guest Professors
The selection of guest professors takes place in two stages. At the beginning of each year, CILS advertises the program through American universities and conducts personal interviews with interested professors. The criteria for selection include teaching experience and practical expertise in the field, as the selected professors are also practicing lawyers. CILS sends the compiled list to its European network partner institutions, which then select professors based on their teaching areas. Guest lecturers can specify up to four countries where they do not wish to teach, but otherwise, they have no say in which institution will invite them.
