Translation and Translation Studies

The Translation and Translation Studies program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of language structures and their meanings. This program aims to equip students with the skills necessary for interpersonal and intercultural communication, enabling them to facilitate understanding between nations and peoples.

Profession

Language is a unique treasure, and the ability to speak and communicate is what differentiates humans from other creatures. A linguist studies language structures and their meanings, while a professional translator implements interpersonal and intercultural communication. This profession requires a deep understanding of languages and their roles in various spheres of life.

Educational Process

During the first year, students start their educational process with the English language, obtaining language skills relevant to the intermediate or upper-intermediate level (B1-B2 in accordance with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment). Alongside English, they delve into Humanities, including Philosophy, History, Culture Studies, Sociology, and others.

In the second year, students learn an additional foreign language of their choice, such as Spanish, German, Italian, French, Chinese, or Japanese. The curriculum includes English Language History, Indo-European Languages, Comparative Historical and Typological Linguistics, Theoretical Phonetics, Theoretical Grammar, Lexicology, Stylistics, and other special philological disciplines. Students also devote significant time to the study of translation and interpretation in theory and practice, as well as IT and Software Fundamentals.

Students are encouraged to explore their individual research abilities and creativities under the supervision of experienced teachers and professors through essays, course papers, and graduation papers.

Practice

Practical skills are extremely important for specialists in interpreting and translation. Oral and written practice in foreign languages, including practice in translation and interpreting, is a crucial part of the students' study. They work on translations in different functional styles of language, such as belle-lettres, publicistic and newspaper styles, scientific prose, and the style of official documents. In the fourth year, students acquire professional skills by working as translators and interpreters in various companies and agencies, both domestically and internationally.

Career

The skills obtained through this program provide graduates with an excellent basis for a wide range of careers, not only as translators and interpreters but also in other language-related employments in various spheres and areas of life. Many graduates become top managers in Russian and foreign companies, work in municipal and governmental structures, and easily balance their business and personal life due to their fluency in two or more foreign languages.
