Program Overview

Introduction to the Master of Science in Biotechnology

The Master of Science in Biotechnology is an interdisciplinary and research-oriented program that offers students the opportunity to expand and deepen their knowledge of the properties, production processes, and diverse applications of enzymes and microorganisms in the food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries.

Key Aspects of the Program

  • The program is taught in English.
  • The standard period of study is 4 semesters.
  • The program has a limited number of places available (22 places).
  • The application deadline for EU/EWR students is June 15th.
  • Tuition fees include a semester fee, and additional fees apply for international students from non-EU/EWR countries.

Program Structure

The program is divided into four block modules per semester, each lasting four weeks. This allows students to intensively focus on a specific topic area. The modules typically conclude with an examination on the Friday of the fourth module week.

First Semester

In the first semester, students acquire advanced knowledge of microorganisms, proteins, biocatalysis, genetic engineering, and analytical methods. They delve into the world of food microbiology, the cultivation of recombinant strains, product formation by whole cells or their enzymes, and receive a comprehensive introduction to the corresponding research strategies.

Second and Third Semesters

In the second and third semesters, students plan their studies according to their individual interests and desired specialization. They can focus on enzymatic production processes and their use in industry or on food microbiology and the multiplication of microorganisms. Regardless of the individual orientation chosen, students are gradually introduced to independent research starting from the second semester.

Third Semester Abroad or Internship

The third semester can be used for a stay abroad at one of the many partner universities in Europe or overseas or for an internship. This provides students with the opportunity to gain international experience and insights into different educational systems and research environments.

Master's Thesis

In the fourth semester, students conclude their studies with a research-intensive Master's thesis. They have the chance to work in a team on current experimental research projects, applying their acquired knowledge and practical skills to contribute creatively to innovation in biotechnology.

Study Goals

As a "Hohenheimer Biotechnologist," graduates are able to:

  • Develop complex biotechnological production processes in life science companies.
  • Discover new ways for the sustainable use of enzymes and microorganisms in the life science industry.
  • Implement current molecular biological and biochemical methods into innovative problem-solving strategies.
  • Modify current methods if necessary to solve a specific task.
  • Apply their interdisciplinary knowledge in various areas of the food, pharmaceutical, and chemical industries.

Requirements

The formal requirements for the Master's program include:

  • A Bachelor's degree in natural or engineering sciences (180 ECTS credits).
  • Subject-specific knowledge in biotechnology, biochemistry, organic chemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, and process engineering (at least 75 points).
  • English language proficiency at the B2 level.

Practical Experience and Research

The Master's program in Biotechnology is embedded in ongoing research projects at the Institute of Food Science and Biotechnology. Students work extensively in modern laboratories and gain insights into practice-relevant methods and production processes. The program also offers the opportunity to participate in exciting day excursions to companies from various industry sectors, providing unique insights into the branch.
