Objectives
The objective of the program is to acquire common tools for describing solids and molecules, including atomistics, Lewis structures, molecular orbital theory, and geometric crystallography.
Responsibilities
The program is led by Sandrine BRICE-PROFETA.
Content
The program covers a range of topics, including:
- Atomistics: generalities, characteristics of an atom, emission spectra of the hydrogen atom and hydrogenic ions, electronic structure, and energy levels.
- Description of the atom in quantum mechanics: introduction, wave-particle duality, Schrˆdinger equation, wave functions, and quantum numbers.
- Periodic table: organization of elements, presentation of main chemical families, evolution of atomic properties, and polarization.
- Electronic structure and geometry of molecules: molecular structure and geometry, Lewis model, VSEPR model, and hybridization of atomic orbitals.
- Structure of the solid state: generalities, classification of crystals, unit cell, coordination, compactness, and mass density.
- Weak bonds: description of Van der Waals interactions and hydrogen bonds, identification of weak bonds in simple substances, and application to phase transition temperatures.
Assessment
The program includes a monitored assignment (1.5 hours) worth 90% and continuous assessment in the form of a homework assignment/QCM worth 10%.
