Program Overview
Combined BA/MS or BS/MS in Psychology Program
The Combined BA/MS or BS/MS in Psychology program is designed for students who wish to earn both a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Psychology. This program provides a strong foundation for individuals who plan to pursue a PhD in one of the many subfields of psychology. It also serves the needs of students who are unsure of their future professional goals and of individuals seeking a terminal master's degree before entering the workforce.
Program Description
The program is tailored to provide students with a comprehensive education in psychology, preparing them for a wide range of career opportunities. It is especially suitable for those who intend to pursue a PhD in psychology, as well as those who are unsure of their future professional goals or seeking a terminal master's degree.
Application Requirements
To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Be a Villanova psychology major with junior status
- Have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 (most accepted applicants have higher GPAs)
- Have a GPA in the psychology major of at least 3.2 (most accepted applicants have higher GPAs)
- Have completed or be enrolled in at least six psychology courses, which must include:
- PSY 2000 - Statistics
- PSY 2050 - Research Methods
- PSY 2100 - Seminar in Professional Development
- PSY 4200 - Biopsychology or PSY 4500 - Cognitive Psychology
- Two additional psychology electives
- Although not required for application, most successful applicants have demonstrated interest in psychological research by participating in a research laboratory.
Admission Criteria
The application process requires the following:
- Unofficial undergraduate transcripts (uploaded on the Academic History page of the application)
- Two letters of recommendation
- Approval from the Psychology Majors Program Coordinator, Dr. Slonecker
- Statement of Goals (no more than two pages), which should include:
- Immediate and long-term career goals
- How prior experiences (e.g., academic, research, professional, leadership) have helped prepare for graduate education, and how those experiences may have shaped current interests
- Why the program is a good fit for the applicant, and why the applicant is a good fit for the program
- If applicable, specific faculty members whose research resonates with the applicant's interests
- Optionally, a brief paragraph describing lived experiences and other barriers that might have impacted academic performance and professional experience.
Application Deadline
The application deadline to begin graduate courses next fall is March 15.
