Program Overview


Master of Science in Church Management

The Villanova Master of Science in Church Management (MSCM) is an online program built upon two foundational elements: a proven business curriculum and a faith-based approach to church management. Each student learns the study of management and its applications within the context of church leadership in the Christian tradition.


Program Overview

The MSCM curriculum is holistic and fully integrated as a standalone graduate studies program. Each course is meticulously designed for those who lead churches and addresses management issues from a faith-based perspective. The program covers an array of management topics, including:


  • Leadership in religious organizations
  • Civil and church laws
  • Financial oversight
  • Human resource management in a ministry setting

Curriculum

The 30-credit MSCM curriculum is designed to be completed in just 24 months and includes the following courses:


  • MSCM 8510: Introduction to Leadership in Religious Organizations/Organizational Ethics/Catholic Social Thought
  • MSCM 8520: Civil Law and Church Law for Church Administrators
  • MSCM 8610: Stewardship and Development
  • MSCM 8615: Financial Reporting and Controls
  • MSCM 8620: Human Resource Management in a Ministry Setting
  • MSCM 8640: Security Management in Churches
  • MSCM 8625: Organizational Management
  • MSCM 8630: Information Technology
  • MSCM 8635: Church Teaching and Belief
  • MSCM 8650: Pastoral Strategic Planning

Admission Requirements

Admission to the MSCM program is based on experience, letters of recommendation, and a personal essay. Standardized test scores are not required. All applicants must have an undergraduate degree in order to be considered. International applicants must have their undergraduate transcripts independently evaluated to show an equivalence to 120 U.S. credit hours.

Tuition and Financing

Tuition for the MSCM Program is $29,400 (30 credits at $980 per credit). However, students who work for the church will receive a 25% scholarship from Villanova, for a tuition price of $22,050. Many dioceses have special partnerships for additional scholarship opportunities.


Program Schedule

Classes begin in May each year, followed by a one-week residency on the Villanova University campus during early June. After the one-week residency, all remaining MSCM classes are provided online. Live online classes with your professor and cohort are on weeknight evenings (Eastern Time), supplemented by online recorded classes and other assignments.
