University Television Productions

University Television Productions (UTP) produces live multi-camera video streams for live events, studio video content, promotional video, instructional video, and other informational video content. Content is produced by professional staff led student crews.

Advanced Notice Required

At least a four-week advance notice is required for scheduling productions.

BTV Programming Information

UTP programs are aired as part of BTV's 24/7 programmed channel 60 on Cable One's cable network and simulcast on BTV's website. All BTV content is created or produced by Boise State University.

Work Study Opportunities

UTP employs work-study students each semester to work on studio and remote broadcast production teams and to staff the Department of Media's Equipment Room. Other positions, including editors, videographers, and reporting positions, are also available.

Course Credit Opportunities

UTP is also an elective Media course: MEDIA-117, MEDIA-317, MEDIA-417 Media Activities. Students get hands-on experience in writing, camera and audio operation, and live edit in the studio and on remote shoots. These classes provide instruction and experience in multi-camera and single-camera field recording. Students enrolled in a UTP course have opportunities to produce media content in the areas of social media content, news, sports, cultural, satire/parody, instructional, educational, and children's programming. Students working in this program benefit from a real-world environment where they can apply critical thinking skills in the area of media and media production. Students may enroll for 1-3 credits and may re-enroll for credit in subsequent semesters.

History

Over the years, UTP has recorded and broadcast thousands of university events. Since 1986, UTP has taped many distinguished lecturers and other campus events, including many non-revenue producing athletic events for broadcast and archival purposes. In this way, students and community members can watch taped programs they could not actually attend. UTP has produced programs for many community organizations, such as training videos, dual language presentations, public service announcements, and commercials, some of which have aired on commercial television stations. Many UTP production students build their resume with the experience gained in the program.

In 2013, UTP moved into the high definition digital format and began providing live streaming on the internet as an option of broadcast. Soon after, UTP became fully responsible for providing content and programming Boise State's cable channel and rebranded the channel BTV. In 2015, UTP fully outfitted its larger television studio with a full 4K workflow. In the summer of 2018, University Television received the donation of production facilities and master control facilities from KTRV in Nampa, Idaho. UTP greatly benefited from the new production facilities as it aided in the development of the 360° Studio.

During the onset of the COVID epidemic, in the late spring of 2020, UTP pivoted and negotiated with stakeholders of the Special Event Center on Boise State's campus to host virtual events. A large multi-source control room was installed in the former projection booth, and cameras and video monitors were added to the auditorium. The SpEC can host Live televised events, Hybrid events, and fully Virtual events depending on the client's needs.
