Introduction to the Campus Security Authority Re-Certification Training

The Campus Security Authority (CSA) Re-Certification Training is an annual requirement for individuals designated as CSAs by Boise State University. This training provides a broad overview of the Clery Act, the university's obligations under the law, and the reporting requirements for CSAs.

Overview of the Clery Act

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, commonly known as the Clery Act, is a federal statute that requires colleges and universities participating in federal student aid programs to publish an annual security report. This report must accurately disclose campus crime statistics and security information.

Role and Responsibilities of a Campus Security Authority

A Campus Security Authority is an individual or organization associated with an institution that has been designated to receive and report crime information. The role of a CSA includes:

  • Reporting specific types of crimes to the Clery Compliance Officer/Department of Public Safety
  • Documenting crime reports in good faith
  • Forwarding crime report information to the Clery Compliance Officer using the CSA Reporting Form
  • Providing assistance to victims and explaining how to get help
  • Submitting reports for statistical purposes, even if the victim chooses to remain anonymous

Types of Crimes That Must Be Reported

The Clery Act requires universities to report crimes that occur:

  • On campus property
  • On streets bordering campus property and up to and including the sidewalk across the street
  • During off-campus, university-sponsored trips The following crimes are specifically required to be reported:
  • Murder/Negligent Manslaughter/Non-Negligent Manslaughter
  • Sex Offense/Forcible or Non-Forcible
  • Robbery
  • Aggravated Assault
  • Burglary
  • Motor Vehicle Theft
  • Arson
  • Crimes of Domestic Violence and Dating Violence
  • Stalking
  • Simple Assault*
  • Larceny-Theft*
  • Intimidation*
  • Destruction/Damage/Vandalism of Property*
  • Liquor Law Violations
  • Drug Law Violations
  • Weapons Violations
  • Hazing*

How to Make a Report to the Clery Compliance Officer

A CSA should immediately forward any crime report information to the Clery Compliance Officer using the CSA Reporting Form. This information must be received quickly in the event it is necessary to issue a "timely warning" to the campus community of a serious or continuing threat.

Requirements for Completing the Training

To receive credit for this training, individuals must complete the required test with a 100% score. The training must be completed annually, and a certificate of completion will be provided via email for records.
