Program Overview
Introduction to Shanghai Normal University
Shanghai Normal University (SHNU) was founded in 1954 as Shanghai Teachers Training College. Over the years, the university has undergone several transformations, including expansions and mergers with other institutions. In 1994, SHNU combined with Shanghai Teachers College of Technology to form a new Shanghai Normal University.
History and Development
From 1956 to 1958, the university was divided into two colleges: Shanghai No. 1 Teachers College and Shanghai No. 2 Teachers College. These two colleges were later combined to form Shanghai Teachers College. In 1972, the university was renamed Shanghai Normal University after merging with four other institutions, including East China Normal University. However, in 1978, it was restored to its previous name, Shanghai Teachers College, and was later renamed Shanghai Teachers University in 1984.
Academic Structure
SHNU has 16 colleges and 81 research bodies, making it a comprehensive institution with a wide range of academic programs and research opportunities. The university is also home to several other institutions, including the Shanghai Teachers Training Center, Shanghai College Teachers Training Center, and the Editorial Department of Academic Abstracts of Liberal Arts of College Journals.
Scholarships
SHNU offers various scholarships to international students, including the Shanghai Government Scholarship and the Confucius Institute Scholarship.
Shanghai Government Scholarship
The Shanghai Government Scholarship is divided into three classes:
- Class A: For Master's and Ph.D. applicants, with a stipend of approximately RMB 50,000 and RMB 60,000 per year, respectively.
- Class B: For undergraduates, Master's, and Ph.D. applicants, with a stipend of approximately RMB 20,000 per year.
- Class C: For registered undergraduates, Master's, and Ph.D. students, with a stipend of approximately RMB 5,000 per year.
National Scholarships
SHNU is one of the authorized universities to accept international students sponsored by the Confucius Institute Scholarship and China Government Scholarship.
Confucius Institute Scholarship
This scholarship is offered to applicants who apply online. The Confucius Institute Headquarters in Beijing is in charge of the Confucius Institute Scholarship.
China Government Scholarship
The China Scholarship Council in Beijing is responsible for the China Government Scholarship.
Scholarship Offered by ICCS, SHNU
ICCS, SHNU also offers scholarships to applicants who are registered long-term language students in ICCS of SHNU.
