Program: LGBTQ+ Health Certificate

Program Description

This professional specialization certificate program is intended for post-baccalaureate students pursuing a social science and/or health-related graduate program, and health professionals with at least an undergraduate degree who want to supplement their knowledge on LGBTQ+ health and learn actionable strategies to improve health disparities. Utilizing a multidisciplinary lens and intersectional analysis, this program addresses LGBTQ+ specific health issues, social determinants of health, health disparities that specifically impact these populations, and how to apply strategies for advocating and caring for LGBTQ+ populations in a culturally appropriate domain.

This program is available through self-support (funded entirely by student fees and offered in a cohort format) in partnership between one of the CSUN academic colleges and The Tseng College.

Program Requirements

A. Admission Requirements

1. Meet all University admission requirements, including a minimum GPA of 2.5.
2. Hold a minimum of an earned bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in any field.
3. Complete and submit a program application by the application deadline date.

B. Course Requirements

• HSCI 572 Foundations of LGBTQ+ Health (3)
• HSCI 573 Multidisciplinary Health Part 1: Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Other Sexual Minorities (3)
• HSCI 574 Multidisciplinary Health Part 2: Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Persons (3)
• HSCI 575 Strategies for Advocating for LGBTQ+ Health (3)

Total Units Required for the Certificate: 12

Program Learning Outcomes

Students receiving a LGBTQ+ Health Certificate will be able to:

1. Exhibit comprehension of social determinants of health and health inequalities experienced by LGBTQ+ populations in contrast to the heterosexual and cisgender populations.
2. Demonstrate knowledge of cultural components of LGBTQ+ populations and their history.
3. Describe the physical, sexual, and mental health risks among LGBTQ+ populations.
4. Apply multidisciplinary health strategies toward improving the health of LGBTQ+ persons.
5. Examine how to advocate for policies and processes that enhance the health of LGBTQ+ populations.
