The Bachelor of Science in Construction Management is a comprehensive program designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in the construction industry. The program is accredited by the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission of ABET.

Program Vision

To be recognized as a program of choice for students seeking a construction management education and to serve the needs of the construction industry in California, especially in Los Angeles.

Program Mission

The Construction Management Program helps students develop the skills and knowledge needed to successfully complete construction projects on time and within budget, adhering to construction standards and safety guidelines. Graduates will have sufficient knowledge and skills to find employment in commercial, design build, heavy civil, and residential applications of the construction industry.

Program Educational Objectives

The CSUN undergraduate Construction Management Program prepares students for lifelong careers in the construction industry that will allow them to make productive contributions to the construction field and society, and to find job satisfaction. Graduates of this program will:

1. Establish a record of effective application of undergraduate educational tools to accomplish tasks assigned in the workplace.
2. Demonstrate the managerial skills to organize and control construction projects from conception to closeout.
3. Develop inclusive and equitable leadership capabilities through practical applications and team-building techniques in a diverse environment.
4. Present a sense of exploration and the ability to maintain lifelong learning in the areas of emerging construction methods and management technologies.
5. Provide evidence of strong communication skills and delivery.

Curriculum

As a Construction Management major, students will receive a solid, broad-based education. Among the topic areas in the core curriculum are:

• Principles of microeconomics
• Business law
• Construction site surveying
• Calculus or statistics
• Construction materials More advanced courses develop expertise in:
• Real estate law
• Computer applications in construction management
• Fundamentals of green buildings
• Site planning and logistics
• Structural design
• Construction law

ABET Student Outcomes

Upon graduation, graduates shall be able to:

1. Identify, formulate, and solve broadly defined technical or scientific problems by applying knowledge of mathematics and science and/or technical topics to areas relevant to the discipline.
2. Formulate or design a system, process, procedure, or program to meet desired needs.
3. Develop and conduct experiments or test hypotheses, analyze and interpret data, and use scientific judgment to draw conclusions.
4. Communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
5. Understand ethical and professional responsibilities and the impact of technical and/or scientific solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts.
6. Function effectively on teams that establish goals, plan tasks, meet deadlines, and analyze risk and uncertainty.

Degree Requirements

• A grade of C- or better is required in all courses in the major.
• Senior-level (400-plus) courses cannot be taken unless the student has previously completed, or is concurrently completing, all freshman-, sophomore-, and junior-level core requirements. Course requirements can be found in the University Catalog.

Accreditation

The Bachelor of Science in Construction Management is accredited by the Applied and Natural Science Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the commission's General Criteria and Program Criteria for Construction Management and Similarly Named Programs. Graduates of the program are well-prepared for rewarding careers in various sectors of the construction industry, including commercial, design-build, heavy civil, and residential construction.
