Program Overview
Introduction to the Degree in Food Science and Technology
The Degree in Food Science and Technology combines a wide range of scientific disciplines that contribute to the understanding of the three basic pillars of food: the elaboration and conservation of food, food quality and safety, and the food-health binomial. The aim is to train professionals with knowledge of the development, conservation, transformation, packaging, distribution, and use of safe, nutritious, and healthy food.
Professional Outcomes
The food industry is the leading industrial sector in the country, accounting for 15% of the industrial GDP. The number of direct employees in this sector is 450,000 people.
The professional fields in which this profession can be exercised include:
- Food safety
- Quality management and control
- Development and innovation
- Legal, scientific, and technical consulting
- Marketing and commercialization
- Food processing
- Collective restoration and community nutrition
- Public health
Private companies, administration, and research centers are the organizations that fundamentally host the development of these professions.
International Mobility and Internships
Food technology is a discipline with a high degree of internationalization. There are many universities that offer studies related to the Degree in Food Science and Technology, which can be accessed through student exchange programs, such as ERASMUS, PROMOE, and similar programs.
Doing internships in companies is a relevant aspect in the training of a food technologist. Students of the Degree can do internships in more than 200 food companies and institutions located in the Valencian Community.
Continuation of Studies
The Degree in Food Science and Technology allows access to the following university master's degrees at UPV: Food Science and Engineering; and Food Management and Safety (international: UPV, INP Lorraine, London SBU). Additionally, access is possible to any university master's degree at UPV by taking the appropriate leveling courses.
