Program Overview
Bilingual-Bicultural Education Program
The Bilingual-Bicultural Education program at DePaul University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of bilingual education and its applications.
Degree Requirements
The program requires a total of 36 quarter hours of coursework in Bilingual-Bicultural Education, with a grade of C or better in each course. The required courses are:
- BBE 402: Designing Language Programs (4 quarter hours)
- BBE 570: Language, Literacies and Cultures (4 quarter hours)
- BBE 406: Sociocultural and Historical Perspectives in Bilingual Education (4 quarter hours)
- BBE 407: Equity Issues in Assessment of Language Learners (4 quarter hours)
- BBE 425: Biliteracy Practices in Bilingual Education and ESL (4 quarter hours)
- BBE 560: Second, World and Heritage Language Acquisition (4 quarter hours)
- BBE 524: Methods of Teaching English as a Second Language (4 quarter hours)
- BBE 526: Theoretical Foundations of Teaching ESL and WLE (4 quarter hours)
- BBE 599: Leadership in Educating Linguistically Diverse Learners (4 quarter hours)
Social and Cultural Foundations Courses
In addition to the Bilingual-Bicultural Education courses, students are required to complete 8 quarter hours of Social and Cultural Foundations courses, with a grade of C or better in each course. The required courses are:
- SCG 408: Education and Society (4 quarter hours)
- SCG 403: Human Development and Learning: Elementary (4 quarter hours)
- Alternatively, SCG 406: Human Development and Learning: Secondary (4 quarter hours)
Field Experience Hours
Students are also required to complete 100 field experience hours in ESL/BE, which are non-credit and non-tuition, with a PA grade required.
Master of Arts (MA) Degree Requirements
The Master of Arts degree requires an additional 4 quarter hours of coursework, with a grade of C or better. The required course is:
- BBE 589: Thesis Research in Bilingual-Bicultural Education (4 quarter hours)
The Master's Thesis is completed in conjunction with faculty advisement, and preparation for the writing of the Thesis should begin well in advance of the completion of coursework. An oral examination on the Thesis is also required.
