Introduction to the Spanish Program
The Spanish program at DePaul University is designed to study the language, literature, and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. With over 400 million native Spanish speakers and its status as an official language in 21 countries, Spanish is a vital language for communication in our interconnected world.
Program Overview
The program develops fluency and communication skills, preparing students for careers in various fields. Chicago's diverse Latin American communities provide an ideal setting for practicing Spanish, with numerous festivals, neighborhoods, restaurants, museums, and cultural institutions to explore.
Study Abroad Opportunities
DePaul University offers Study Abroad programs in Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Peru, Puerto Rico, and Spain, allowing students to grow linguistically and expand their cultural understanding of Spanish-speaking societies.
Career Opportunities
The Spanish department partners with the College of Education to award teaching degrees at the middle school and high school levels. The university also offers a 3+3 BA/JD program, which enables high-achieving first-year undergraduate students to be admitted simultaneously to the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and the College of Law.

- SPN 260E: Cervantes and Sor Juana: Transatlantic Connections (4 hours)
- SPN 261: Latinidades in Literature and Popular Culture
- Select three SPN courses in literature, film, or cultural studies, including one with a premodern focus (before 1800)
- Select three 200/300 level SPN electives
