Introduction to the Inclusive Screenwriting Program

The Jarvis College of Computing and Digital Media at DePaul offers an Inclusive Screenwriting graduate course, as well as an Inclusive Representation in Film and TV undergraduate course. These programs aim to provide students with a more equitable approach to storytelling, moving beyond traditional paradigms rooted in a straight, white male point of view.

Program Description

The Inclusive Screenwriting program examines how marginalized groups have been stereotyped and sidelined on screen. Students learn to broaden their understanding of what a story is, what it can do, and how it works for everyone. The program is designed to provide a toolkit for students to use in the industry, promoting a more inclusive and diverse representation in film and TV.

Course Details

  • The Inclusive Screenwriting graduate course is taught by professional lecturer Jess King (LAS MA '20) and focuses on flipping the script on traditional storytelling paradigms.
  • The Inclusive Representation in Film and TV undergraduate course is co-taught with fellow instructor Fatou Samba (CDM MFA '18) and explores the representation of marginalized groups in film and TV.
    • Students in these courses learn to analyze and challenge existing stereotypes and biases in storytelling.
    • The programs emphasize the importance of inclusive representation and provide students with the skills to create more diverse and equitable stories.

Program Goals

The Inclusive Screenwriting program aims to:

  • Provide students with a deeper understanding of the importance of inclusive representation in film and TV.
  • Equip students with the skills to create more diverse and equitable stories.
  • Promote a more nuanced and empathetic understanding of different identities and experiences.
  • Foster a more inclusive and diverse industry, where all voices are valued and represented.
