Program Overview


Hospitality Leadership (BSB) Program

The Hospitality Leadership program at DePaul University is designed to provide students with a comprehensive education in the hospitality industry, combining hospitality industry knowledge with key business skills. The program aims to create industry leaders who are prepared to deliver hospitality to anyone, whenever or wherever needed.


Program Overview

The Hospitality Leadership major is comprised of three components: the Liberal Studies Program, the College of Business core, and the specific requirements of the School of Hospitality and Sports Business. The program has three primary curricular goals:


  1. Embed a true sense of hospitality within students, creating a bedrock belief that hospitality is about serving others.
  2. Create industry leaders prepared to deliver hospitality to anyone who needs it, whenever or wherever.
  3. Embrace the Vincentian mission: to share hospitality with the underprivileged and disenfranchised members of our communities.

Program Requirements

The program requires a total of 192 quarter hours, consisting of:


  • Business Core Requirements: 60 quarter hours
  • Liberal Studies Requirements: 72 quarter hours
  • Major Requirements: 44 quarter hours
  • Open Electives: 16 quarter hours

Learning Outcomes

The program has two sets of learning outcomes: Core Outcomes and Program Specific Outcomes.


Core Outcomes

  • Use analytical and reflective skills in decision-making.
  • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Recognize legal and ethical issues confronting them.
  • Contribute to the performance of a group within a business setting.
  • Know the differences among global economies, institutions, business practices, and cultures.
  • Acquire knowledge of the functional areas of business and the interrelationships among the functional areas within a business.

Program Specific Outcomes

Students will be able to:


  • Describe the parallel concepts of service and experience management.
  • Demonstrate hospitality service through voluntarism at a community event using hospitality skills.
  • Demonstrate functional knowledge about hospitality business applications and operations.

College Core Requirements

All undergraduate students in the Driehaus College of Business complete foundational courses in the areas of accountancy, economics, finance, management, and marketing. The core curriculum also includes courses that emphasize the increasingly quantitative and technological nature of business, the importance of the entrepreneurial mindset, and how students can use their business education to address important social challenges.

  • ACC 101: Introduction to Accounting I
  • ACC 102: Introduction to Accounting II
  • BUS 101: Introduction to Driehaus: Business Fundamentals and the Entrepreneurial Mindset
  • BUS 102: Business Analytics
  • BUS 103: Business for Social Good
  • ECO 105: Principles of Microeconomics
  • ECO 106: Principles of Macroeconomics
  • FIN 310: Introduction to Finance
  • MAT 137: Business Statistics
  • MGT 300: Principles of Management
  • MGT 301: Principles of Operations Management
  • MKT 301: Principles of Marketing

Business Technology Requirement

The Business Technology requirement may be replaced by CSC 243.


Math Requirement

The Math requirement for all business majors (except Actuarial Science majors) may be replaced by MAT 348 or MAT 351.


Grade Minimum Requirements

A minimum grade of C- is required for the following courses: ACC 101, ACC 102, BUS 101, BUS 102, BUS 103, BUS 202, ECO 105, ECO 106, MAT 137, and any IB course used for the Hospitality Leadership major and Global Business Perspective.


Liberal Studies Requirements

The Liberal Studies Program requirements include:


  • Chicago Quarter: 4 quarter hours
  • Focal Point: 4 quarter hours
  • Writing: 8 quarter hours
  • Quantitative Reasoning: not required
  • Sophomore Year: 4 quarter hours
  • Junior Year: 4 quarter hours (Experiential Learning)
  • Senior Year: 4 quarter hours (Capstone)

Learning Domains

The Liberal Studies Program requires courses in the following learning domains:


  • Arts and Literature (AL): 3 courses
  • Historical Inquiry (HI): 2 courses
  • Math and Computing (MC): not required
  • Philosophical Inquiry (PI): 2 courses
  • Religious Dimensions (RD): 2 courses
  • Scientific Inquiry (SI): 1 lab course
  • Social, Cultural, and Behavioral Inquiry (SCBI): 1 course

Major Requirements

In addition to the Liberal Studies Program requirements, students majoring in Hospitality Leadership must complete the following courses:

  • HSB 200: The Guest Traveler and Fan Experience
  • HSB 203: Leadership in Hospitality and Sports Business
  • HSB 208: Strategic Talent Management
  • HSB 250: Managing Your Hospitality and Sports Business Career
  • HSB 330: Restaurant Operations
  • HSB 340: Lodging Property Management
  • HSB 350: Event Planning
  • HSB 396: Strategy in Hospitality and Sports Business
  • Select one of the following courses: HSB 309, MGT 314, or MKT 305
  • Eight hours of elective credit chosen from the following courses:

    • IB 350: International Business Seminar (Hospitality-led programs only)

Open Electives

Open elective credit (16 quarter hours) is needed to meet the minimum graduation requirement of 192 hours.


Experiential Learning

Hospitality Leadership majors must complete HSB 303 and HSB 304, which satisfies the requirement for Experiential Learning in the Liberal Studies Program.


Career Management Course

Students are required to complete the Career Course (250) associated with the major.


Global Business Perspective

If an IB or HSB course is shared between Global Business Perspective and the Hospitality major, additional hours of Open Elective credit are required. Any IB or HSB course must be passed with a C- or higher.


Graduation Requirements

All Hospitality and Sports Business (HSB) courses and any other courses used toward the major must be completed with a minimum grade of C- (or PA where specified) and with a combined GPA of 2.000 or higher.
