Program Requirements
The TEACH Program requires students to complete a series of courses and field experiences that provide them with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions necessary to become effective teachers. Field Experiences
The program includes a range of field experiences that provide students with opportunities to apply theoretical concepts in real-world settings. These experiences include:
- Observations and participation in middle grades and high school classrooms
- Teaching demonstrations and modeling
- Field experiences in urban schools
- Student teaching in middle grades and high school content area classrooms
Assessment Practices
The program emphasizes the importance of assessment practices in teaching and learning. Students learn about various assessment methods and tools, including standardized, quantitative, and qualitative assessments. They also learn about the cultural, social, economic, and language influences on assessments and the issues of reliability and validity in assessment.
Research Methods
The program introduces students to education research methods and discipline-specific research and inquiry. Students learn about the multiple frameworks that inform education research and the various methodologies employed in collecting and analyzing data. They also develop and implement small discipline-specific research projects, identifying research questions, conducting a literature search, developing a theoretical framework, and collecting and analyzing data.
Capstone Experience
The program culminates in a capstone experience that requires students to integrate their knowledge and skills in a comprehensive project. The capstone experience provides students with an opportunity to demonstrate their understanding of teaching and learning and their ability to apply theoretical concepts in real-world settings.
Student Teaching
The program includes a student teaching experience that provides students with an opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in a real-world setting. Student teaching is a culminating experience that requires students to be in the classroom full-time, participating in both in-class instruction and extra-curricular activities related to the school.
