Program Overview

Neuroscience Program

The Neuroscience program at DePaul University offers a comprehensive curriculum that explores the structure and function of the nervous system, as well as the latest advances in the field. The program is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in the principles of neuroscience, including the anatomical, cellular, and molecular mechanisms of neuronal function.

Course Descriptions

The program includes a range of courses that cover various aspects of neuroscience, including:

  • NEU 201: Introduction to Neuroscience: This course introduces the structure and function of the nervous system, as well as approaches to study and model it.
  • NEU 228: Neuroethics: This course examines moral standards and issues that arise in the practice of neuroscience.
  • NEU 256: Introduction to Computational Neuroscience: This course provides an introduction to basic computational methods for understanding what nervous systems do and how they function.
  • NEU 301: Research Methods in Neuroscience: This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of how questions are answered in neuroscience by exploring experimental designs used in neuroscience research.
  • NEU 310: Seminar in Neuropsychopharmacology: This course covers how substances from the outside world affect the brain and behavior by reviewing primary research literature.
  • NEU 339: Cellular Neurobiology: This course examines the cellular and molecular mechanisms of neuronal function and the changes that occur in processes such as learning and memory.
  • NEU 380: Special Topic in Neuroscience: This course is a lecture and discussion-based course focused on a particular topic in neuroscience.
  • NEU 390: Neuroscience Capstone: This course is a liberal studies course for seniors concluding their neuroscience major, examining one topic in neuroscience from multiple viewpoints.
  • NEU 399: Independent Study in Neuroscience: This course allows students to conduct experimental and/or library independent study of a topic in neuroscience.

Prerequisites and Requirements

Each course has specific prerequisites and requirements, including:

  • A grade of C- or better in certain courses
  • Instructor consent
  • Junior or senior standing
  • Status as a neuroscience major
