Program Overview


Introduction to the Chinese Language Center (CLC) Program

The Chinese Language Center (CLC) offers a comprehensive program designed for students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds to learn Chinese effectively. The program aims to ensure rapid progress and improvement in students' language proficiency, focusing on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.


Program Structure

The CLC operates on a quarter basis, with four quarters in a year, each lasting three months. The quarters start in March, June, September, and December, with a six-week Summer Intensive Program offered in July. Classes are conducted in Chinese, with small class sizes of four to ten students, and are held for 3 hours per day, 15 hours per week.


Course Offerings

The CLC offers various courses to cater to students' different language proficiency levels and interests. These include:


  • Integrated Courses: Divided into eight levels, aiming to develop students' general language skills.
  • Improvement Courses: Focus on improving daily conversation and reading skills, with three levels of conversation classes and eight levels of reading classes.
  • Practical Courses: Designed for advanced-level students.
  • Cultural Courses: Include Language and Culture, Business Conversation, News Reading, and Taiwanese classes, which provide an introduction to Chinese history, culture, politics, economy, religion, and arts.

Cultural Courses

The CLC offers cultural classes that focus on specific aspects of Chinese art, history, and society, such as:


  • Peking Opera
  • Calligraphy
  • Painting
  • Name Chop Carving
  • Taiwanese
  • Tea Customs
  • Chinese Culinary Art
  • Chinese Martial Arts
  • Folk Singing
  • Chinese macramť

These classes are mainly taught in Chinese and help strengthen students' understanding of Chinese culture.


Placement Evaluations

Placement evaluations are given to each student to determine their appropriate class level. The CLC also provides consultation from teachers and free pronunciation courses to help students learn Mandarin Phonetic Symbols.


Class Schedule

The regular class schedule is from Monday to Friday, with two time slots:


  1. 9:10 AM - 12:00 PM
  2. 14:10 PM - 17:00 PM

Starting from the Fall 2025 term, the class schedule will be adjusted to:


  1. Morning: 9:00 AM - 11:40 AM
  2. Afternoon: 2:30 PM - 5:10 PM
