Security Training Program

The Security Training program at Bowling Green State University is designed to provide faculty and staff with information security training through an online platform. The training consists of five different modules covering various topics such as malware and phishing.

Program Overview

The program is based on general best practices and is not specifically tailored to BGSU. However, it provides a high-level overview of common data security issues and helps institutions educate their users to avoid data breaches.

Learning Objectives

The learning objectives of the program include:

• Understanding scammers' motives and why they target institutions
• Learning how to stay vigilant when using BGSU email and being mindful of inadvertent disclosures
• Knowing how to seek help if a user believes their account has been compromised as a result of a phishing scam or malware attack
• Identifying various types of malware and malware delivery
• Understanding that malware and ransomware is an increasing threat
• Identifying best practices for using and storing passwords, creating strong passwords, and the importance of using unique passwords for different accounts
  • Understanding password managers and how to use them
  • Recognizing the importance of using cloud services only when compliant with University policies
  • Being aware of the risks associated with device theft while traveling
  • Knowing how to prevent unauthorized access to secured buildings, physical files, and electronic devices
  • Recognizing the importance of keeping mobile software up-to-date
  • Understanding the benefits of Two Factor Authentication

Program Details

The program is comprised of virtual courses and quizzes to help users understand common data security issues. The training modules can be accessed multiple times and completed at the user's preferred pace. The system will remember where the user left off when they last accessed the specific training.
