Introduction to Air Force ROTC Detachment 620
The Air Force ROTC Detachment 620 is a program offered at Bowling Green State University, with a mission to develop Air and Space Force leaders of character. The program has been a part of the university for over 70 years, producing officers who have gone on to become general officers, pilots, navigators, engineers, nurses, and more.
Program Overview
The Air Force ROTC program is offered to students enrolled at Bowling Green State University, as well as several other nearby universities. The program provides students with leadership opportunities, physical training, and mentorship programs to prepare them for a career in the Air or Space Force.
Cadet Life
Cadets in the program participate in weekly physical fitness, leadership laboratories, and academic classes. As they progress through the program, they take on increased responsibilities and leadership roles, including leading physical training, assisting flight commanders, and planning morale events.
Freshman - AS100 Cadet
As a freshman, cadets begin their journey in the Air Force ROTC program. They participate in weekly physical fitness, leadership laboratories, and academic classes, and start to develop their leadership skills.
Sophomore - AS200 Cadet
As a sophomore, cadets continue to grow their leadership skills and take on more responsibilities within the detachment. They may lead physical training, assist flight commanders, and help incoming freshmen adjust to life as a cadet.
Junior - AS300 Cadet
As a junior, cadets are considered upperclassmen and play a crucial role in the planning and execution of operations within the detachment. They start to prepare for a specific career in the Air or Space Force and take on increased responsibilities.
Senior - AS400 Cadet
As a senior, cadets practice leading many of the cadets in the squadron and have a major impact on their morale, training, and performance. They learn their career field and where they will be stationed after graduation.
How to Join
To join the Air Force ROTC program, students must meet certain academic and medical requirements. They must be accepted to the university or one of the cross-town universities, have a minimum college cumulative GPA of 2.0, and meet minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 by the end of their sophomore fall semester.

- Be accepted to the university or one of the cross-town universities
- Sign up for AFROTC courses as a freshman or sophomore
- Have a minimum college cumulative GPA of 2.0
- Meet minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 by the end of sophomore fall semester
- Medical Requirements:
- Disclose any history of diagnosed medical issues
- Take a prescription medication (if applicable)
- Physical Requirements:
- Have a sports physical to participate in physical training
- Be within the Air Force body mass standard
- Pass the Air Force Physical Fitness Assessment by the third semester
Admission Criteria
Students can join the program as incoming freshmen or sophomores. They must sign up for the appropriate courses and meet the academic and medical requirements. The program requires a minimum of 3 years to complete, with 5 semesters as a full-time student.
