Introduction to the You Be The Chemist Challenge

The You Be The Chemist Challenge is an interactive academic contest sponsored by the Chemical Educational Foundation. It aims to excite students about science by testing their knowledge of chemistry concepts and their real-world applications.

Program Details

The Challenge is open to 5th-8th grade students and involves a series of competitions at the local, state, and national levels. Participating schools and students have the opportunity to receive national recognition, scholarships, and prizes.

Challenge Format

  • The Challenge tests students' knowledge of chemistry concepts, including:
    • The scientific method
    • Properties of matter
    • Chemical formulas and equations
    • Chemistry in the human body
  • The competition involves a multiple-choice test, and students are encouraged to seek additional examples and explanations of chemistry concepts from outside resources.

Participation Requirements

  • Study materials are provided free online to help students prepare for the competition.
  • Schools and educators are required to register for the program and administer the qualifying exam to their students.
  • The top three finishers from each school will be invited to compete in the State Competition.

State and National Competitions

  • The State Competition will be held at Imagination Station, and the top finishers will receive prizes.
  • The winner of the State Competition will advance to the National Competition in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and will receive an all-expenses-paid trip.

Preparation and Resources

  • The Chemical Education Foundation offers free online study materials to help students succeed at every level of the Challenge.
  • Students are encouraged to review the study materials, including the Periodic Table and Periodic Table of Atomic Weights handouts, and seek additional examples and explanations of chemistry concepts from outside resources.

Conclusion

The You Be The Chemist Challenge is a unique opportunity for students to engage with chemistry concepts and compete at the local, state, and national levels. With its interactive format and emphasis on real-world applications, the Challenge aims to inspire students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).
