College of Arts and Sciences
The College of Arts and Sciences offers a comprehensive program in French, designed to provide students with a deep understanding of the language, literature, and culture of France and the Francophone world.
Learning Outcomes
Upon completion of the baccalaureate degree, students in French are expected to:
- Write, listen, and converse proficiently about French and Francophone literary works, movements, and genres about the civilizations of France and the Francophone world;
- Master reading comprehension, terminology, and basic research tools appropriate to literary and cultural analysis;
- Demonstrate language proficiency through standardized examinations;
- Engage in rational, civil discourse in a manner respectful of others and the cultural diversity of the Francophone world.
Major, Bachelor of Arts
The Major in French requires 30 hours at the 3000/4000 level and a minor. The program is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the French language and culture.
Minor
The Minor in French requires 18 hours of coursework, including:
- Choose two of the three:
- FREN 3560
- FREN 3570
- FREN 3580
- Choose four courses from among 2020, 2220, and any level French course. Topics courses may be repeated if the subject changes; only one class taught in English may be counted towards the minor.
Applied French Minor
The Applied French Minor requires 18 hours of coursework. The program is designed to provide students with a practical understanding of the French language and culture.
