Master of Science in Mathematics
Program Overview
Master of Science in Mathematics
The Master of Science program in Mathematics at Cal Poly has approximately twenty students actively involved in studying and teaching. Full-time students usually complete degree requirements in two years. Upon completion of the program, many students enter careers in teaching or industry, although several enroll in Ph.D. programs at other universities. Graduate classes are small, and graduate students receive individual attention.
Overview of the Program
Students have the opportunity to teach undergraduate courses to help offset the cost of tuition. Paid summer research opportunities are available, and students may elect to turn their research experience into a thesis.
Specialization in Applied Mathematics
The Mathematics Department offers a Specialization in Applied Mathematics within the Master's in Mathematics Program. This specialization provides students with advanced coursework in applied mathematics, including data science, modeling, and computational mathematics, along with a rigorous foundation in the classical subjects of algebra, discrete mathematics, and analysis. Students engage with faculty on a wide range of interdisciplinary research through thesis or summer research, as well as conference or workshop participation and attendance. Additional opportunities for targeted summer internships, teaching college-level mathematics, or graduate assistantships uniquely prepare graduates for careers in industry or Ph.D. programs.
Highlights of the Program
- Low student-faculty ratio
- Paid learn-by-doing teaching opportunities in mathematics
- Stipend-supported summer research experiences
- Excellent and committed teachers with diverse research interests
